Lash out
Our makeup artist shares the best mascara tips of the trade.
What's the best way to remove mascara bits on eyeshadow?
The best way to remove mascara stains on top of eyeshadow is with a pointy cotton swab (Q-tips®) dipped in eye makeup remover. Be precise. Do not rub, just put the cotton swab on the smudge and twist gently. Patch up the "hole" with a tiny bit of matching eyeshadow and blend.
Should I use an eyelash curler before applying mascara?
Eyelash curlers will benefit almost everyone. Always curl lashes before applying mascara. Curling after is risky. You might get the curler stuck in the moist mascara and rip your lashes out.
Is there an application technique that allows for longer and fuller lashes?
It's all about having the right product to start with: lengthening and volumizing mascara. Then you want to apply a first thin coat to the lashes. Separate carefully, let dry and repeat. For dramatic lashes, add a 3rd coat. Be careful: layering mascara over wet mascara will create clumps. Make sure each coat is completely dry before layering.
Should we wait until the 1st coat of mascara is dry before applying the 2nd one?
Always! You will only get clumps if you layer mascara over wet mascara. The only exception is Marcelle's new VOLUME PRECISION Mascara: its gel-based formula allows you to apply a second coat immediately for buildable volume.
How can we apply some mascara to the bottom lashes of without spreading it under the eye?
People who have oilier skin or who sweat a lot are prone to having runny mascara. The effect can be minimised by lightly powdering the area around the eyes with translucent powder before applying mascara.
When applying liquid eyeliner, it always seems to go on my lashes and clumps before I put mascara. What can I do?
Do your liner and let it dry completely. Brush your lashes from the roots to the tips to remove any liner clump. Apply mascara normally.
Is it true we're not supposed to pump the brush in and out the tube since it pumps in air?
Yes, it’s true. Air in the tube means dry mascara. Plus it hardly gets more product on the applicator. Instead, insert applicator in the tube, give it a half turn and take it out. If you still don't have enough product on the brush, you're ready for a new tube.
